I've been in a similar position (but, it sounds like, less incredibly awful; we had an older cat that wouldn't adapt to a new introduction and who would scent-mark everything, constantly, including our beds, ew), and I remember how exhausting and discouraging it was, and how much of a daily battle.

We were able to solve things by giving up the attempt and locking the old cat in one room for the rest of his life, which only worked because he was so old as to effectively be senile and sedentary. I imagine there's a lot of reasons why it wouldn't work in your situation.

Maybe include your state/location in this post? Even if it's not a formal rehoming request, it may help open the door to a solution. (I'm too far away for rehoming help and significantly too lacking money for anything else, but I sincerely hope you find something that helps, for his sake and also yours.)
