This is Astraea!  She is a cartographer, astronomer, and navigator.

She was a Patreon reward pony for the lucky winner of my yearly drawing for $15+ patrons.

If you guys could help spread the word about my Patreon, that would be swell.  We took a big financial hit the week before last when Bear lacerated her toe and twisted her ankle.  She was only able to return to work yesterday.  We could really use the boost.

I want to get up to 50 patrons and $500 by the end of the year, and I think those are both doable.  The second will be a little harder, so I could use all the help I can get.

Patrons get access to full photo shoots for each custom as well as more behind the scenes stuff.  Patrons at the $15+ level get entered in the yearly drawing for a custom pony.

So if you or your friends are into supporting queer disabled artists, here's a good chance to do that.  The money helps pay bills, buys my meds, feeds us, and gets our cats closer to adequate vet care.

If you want to signal boost on Tumblr,
that post is right here.

In the meantime, how gorgeous is this babe?

The nylon of her hair is very fine and translucent, so delicate that the color shifts slightly depending on the angle - the white looks blue where it's viewed in oblique light, the blue looks purple, the purple looks pink.  It's not an effect I was able to capture adequately, but you should know about it because it makes her absolutely radiant in person.

I honestly think she might be the prettiest custom I've done.  I don't know.  It's hard to say, so many of them have been so beautiful.  But I am especially pleased with her.  You know how sometimes you hit exactly what you were aiming at?

Yeah.

You know how sometimes you hit it right out of the park, better than you had hoped?

Yeah, that.

Really happy with her.  I hope you enjoy taking a look!

Again, her full shoot is available on Patreon to patrons of any level, even $1.  Please go give it a look!  Help us support ourselves!

Thanks, everyone!

Hey, The Actual Bear made a Night Vale pony, and she is currently up for auction with a little over 24 hours left!

Here's a link to the auction, or you can click on any of the pictures below.  It's worth popping over just to look at the other pics.

If you have a Tumblr, you can reblog this post and spread the word.

The white in her hair and parts of her design glow in the dark!  Really pretty!

Good evening, Listeners. Tonight I have a very important announcement. John Peters--you know, the farmer?--has reported seeing a small, disproportionate horse frolicking in his invisible corn fields. He describes the horse as about four inches high with a single, chubby, spiral horn growing from its forehead.

The little horse is Night Vale purple, with a long, loosely curled mane and tail of dark nightshade purple, streaked with pale glowing green. It is described as having a sweet, inviting expression, and seems quite approachable. The markings on her flanks and shoulders appear to represent prominent Night Vale landmarks. Cute!

On her right flank is what appears to be a portrait of an angel--which is impossible, because angels do not exist. But if they did, this one would have a single, glowing eye, and a halo with rays emanating from it that also glowed in the dark. On her right shoulder, the Arby's sign. Flowing up her right shoulder and the side of her neck are the lights frequently seen above the Arby's sign. On her left cheek is a dark eye with a crescent moon for an iris, and on her left flank, the President of the School Board itself, the Glow Cloud (ALL HAIL THE GLOW CLOUD). Below the Cloud, on the tiny horse's hooves, are depicted an antenna and the water tower.

If you should see this small, strangely proportioned horse, consider buying it. No others like it have ever been seen in our fair little desert community. It is surely one of a kind and would make an excellent addition to any Night Vale souvenir collection.

Overseas bidders, contact me here at the studio with the country of destination, any food allergies, and your most private phobia to receive a shipping quote. It will be shipped to the winning bidder in a sturdy box labeled very discreetly so that no one knows you are the sole owner of a tiny, glowing ungulate.

This pretty gal was a gift from my client to their beloved, and I think she came out really beautifully.

She fought me pretty hard, and she was really hard to photograph (digital cameras do not like purple at all), but I am so happy with her. A little goth, and little princess, very pretty, very romantic, and dang, look at her hair. That's perfect, is what that is. She came out so sweet and lovely!

This set went up on my Patreon a while back, and I also have clearance to share it here, so here it is!

New patrons are always welcome!

Drop on by for a visit!

(Not taking commissions, sorry!)

This is one of the ponies The Actual Bear finished earlier this year.

Those of you on Facebook or subscribed to my Patreon may have seen this guy already.

Well, here's more of him.

This gorgeous boy features details from Thorin Oakenshield's map. Included are the Lonely Mountain on his display side and Smaug himself on the other.  There is a thrush with a snail shell on his left hind hoof, and the keyhole - waiting for the last light of Durin's Day - is on his nose.  He wears The Key of Durin around his neck, and key is removable. On his chest is the Arkenstone, a genuine Swarovski crystal surrounded by Dwarven runes. His whole body is parchment-mottled and shimmers slightly gold, and his designs are accented in metallic paint. His hair is in the style of the dwarves, complete with braid and gold-colored beads.

Originally a G3 Butterscotch, Erebor was given a full-body map-style makeover with Liquitex artist's acrylics and Pearl-Ex metallic powders, then rehaired in nylon Volcano, Sunshine, Chocolate Fudge, and Chocolate Pudding by Dollyhair.com.

He's already sold and is on his way to his new home.

Again, not my work, but the work of The Actual Bear.  I just thought you should see him.  Because he's amazing.

I gave you a sneak peek at this girl back around V-Day, but here's the finished set.

I've put this one up on Patreon, but it's free -- you can go look at it and download the little PDF booklet, or the individual pics. You can also share it on Facebook. The tumblr post is right over here, if you wanna share that. I'd like to pull in a few more patrons this month, considering how rough things have been.

Baby Stardust has kind of an epic story.

Baby Stardust 1

Back when Bear and I first met in bellydance class, she had this little G1 Baby Firefly on the dashboard of her truck. It enabled us to strike up a conversation about My Little Ponies, and we sort of formed a friendly acquaintance based on that and on a mutual love of The Last Unicorn. We hung out a few times, she bought some ponies off me, but we sort of fell out of touch.

Baby Stardust 2

She moved to Alaska, then Washington State. We reconnected via the internet, she visited a few times, and then a year and a half ago or thereabouts, she moved back here to Oklahoma where she was promptly inducted into our geeky gaming-and-bad-movies group. Everyone loved her, because she's easy to love.

She also brought all her old ponies with her, and unloaded some of them on me for custom bait . . . including that Baby Firefly. I knew it was her because of the sticky on her back hoof from being stuck to the dashboard. I hid her away. Someday, I knew, I was gonna do something really special with her.

Baby Stardust 3

We became really good friends. Really good. Like, drift-compatible we-named-our-jaeger good. Hung out all the time, RP partners, dorking about everything, just . . . really good friends.

Meanwhile, everyone in the world -- including a random shop owner in Eureka Springs and The Actual Bear herself -- realized that we were a couple.

Time passed.

Vacations were had.

A clue was found. It belonged to me.

Baby Stardust 4

A train ride happened. Certain words were said. And the next morning I woke up early and went out before she got up to grab a thing she'd seen the day before and wanted.

On the way, I impulsively ducked into a little shop and saw a gorgeous dichroic glass necklace (like this one, but not that one) with a tree on it. Stunning little thing. From all the way across the shop I was like "YES THAT I WILL TAKE THAT ONE PLEASE" and I bought it without even looking at the price.

And I brought it back to her in bed and gave it to her and she was so utterly delighted and it was lovely.

Baby Stardust 5

But a couple of months later, the glass tile broke off the bail and was lost somewhere along her delivery route. Her beautiful necklace was no more.

Sadness ensued.

Then I remembered Baby Firefly. A plan was born.

I made this little gal.

Baby Stardust 6

I wanted her to look like the dichroic glass.  I think she does.  I had to color correct these photos so they would show the green tint on her legs, and may have gone a little overboard with it in a couple of places, but the first two are pretty accurate.

The pictures simply do not do her justice.  How she shimmers.  I painted her base coat in pure pthalo blue lightened with pearlescent paint, then sponged more pearl over her to make highlights on her rump, face, wings, and legs.  I layered watered down color and watered down pearl paint over her several times, building up a really vivid iridescent effect.  I used two different kinds of blue -- one purplish, one greenish -- on her body, used green on her legs near the horizon, and purple on her cheeks, ears, nose, and wingtips.

Then I added a whole ocean of shimmering pearlescent stars among the trees. And when that was done, I rehaired her with Dollyhair nylon in Diamond, a stunning new sparkling white that I adore.

I am very, very proud of her!

I was still nervous, but when I gave her to The Actual Bear, she was delighted.  (Of course she was. But I was still really nervous.)

Anyway.  That's the story!

Thank you guys for sticking with me!

It's not Thursday, but who cares?

Meet Ember and Phantom Blacklock, steampunk pirates and scourges of the skies over Equilonia!

Steampunk Ponies Couple Hero 2

These are the ponies I did for the Queen of the Sky Frontier campaign.

I would be sorely remiss if I did not point out that there is still one custom pony slot open over at the Indiegogo campaign for Imperial Blood. Head over there and get your own vampire pony!

Ember Blacklock 1 Hero

I have about a million pictures under here, so dial-up users will be sad pandas. )

And the very last one (yes, I airbrushed out Phantom's neck seam just to see if I could).

Steampunk Ponies Couple Hero 1

And there you have it!

I hope you enjoyed the pictures.  Please comment and let me know!  I worked really hard on these guys, even managing to get them done despite a creative slump, and am incredibly proud.  I think they're possibly the best work I've done, and I sincerely, deeply hope that their new owners are happy with them.  Sending them off was hard.  It was so freakin' hard.  And I don't usually feel that way about the stuff I make.  This time . . . I was just a little in love with them.

Don't forget, they each have a little vignette I wrote for them, coming soon!  I just want to reach goal on the campaign first.  We're at 71% with eight days left to go.

And on that note I'll just point out that I don't do customs on commission, unless you nab a spot in a campaign.  Otherwise, you have to wait until I do one, then try to catch it in auction.  So if you want a pony, again, there's a slot left over at the Imperial Blood campaign.  These ponies will be vampire-themed (read: will probably look slightly goth) with optional fairy wings and/or NSFW attachments.  You can pick the colors, and I go nuts with the rest.  They won't be any less kickass than Ember and Phantom.

Oh, yeah, feel free to link people here so they can see the ponies, if you know anyone who likes that sort of thing!  I would love to show these guys off!

Got back to work on the steamponies yesterday. Not a ton of progress, but some. They are going to be friggin' adorable, and also badass. I hope the people they are meant for love them. It's all I can do right now not to spam you all with pics and ruin the surprise.

I got the rhinestones I needed in the mail today, and am working on the base coat on pony #2, the boy pony. The paint job on the #1 pony is finished except for her cutie mark, because I've been dithering over it. I used a different technique to get the color down, and am trying to decide how I feel about it. It's more textured, and not smooth. These are rough, tough, badass ponies, though, so I guess coarse fur is to be expected after a life of sky piracy. They look great, though. The girl's eyes are . . . they are just amazing. I don't think pictures will do them justice.

I also made my first set of pony goggles. A crude, undecorated prototype that will need refining, yes, but they are functional as-is, and very cute. I just need to find some clear plastic to use for lenses.

Every customizer handles accessories differently. Some sculpt things like pouches and clothes and tack with polyclay or epoxy putty, often right onto the pony. Others make them separately out of appropriate materials. There are lovely things about both approaches, but I've always strongly favored the genuine materials approach. As a child, I was always disappointed by toys that came with accessories that weren't actually usable. Purses and envelopes that wouldn't open, clothes that were sculpted on and not removable, that sort of thing. The bits and bobs I am making now are all removable and more or less totally functional.

There will be lots of pictures once they are done, CRAZY amounts of pictures, of ponies and of each individual accessory because I document the shit out of everything. You would too if you made something that fucking cute and then had to send it away from you forever.

I hope their new friends will be happy with them! They are looking forward to going to their new homes, and I am very much looking forward to sending them!

Thing I Made Thursday, one day early! To make up for all the days-late posts!

Serenity was awfully secretive about her name. She wouldn't give me anything, and then she gave me that, and I was like, "So simple? Okay!" What the pony wants, the pony gets.

She was a gift for [livejournal.com profile] brightlotusmoon. She arrived at her new home today, and now I can post pics!

Serenity

She was made from a G3 Blue Mist who had awful hair and lots of symbol and glitter rubs, and some glue drips, but was otherwise in pretty great shape. This is only the first or second time I've used the pony's base color without repainting.

I'm very happy with how she came out. I think she's right up there in the running for cutest of all the ones I've made.

She was rehaired, as always, in Dollyhair Nylon. The colors are Virgin Snow and Lemon Drop. She was repainted in acrylics and sealed with Testor's Dullcote.

I love her eyes:

Serenity Eyes

More under here! )

It's hard to see, unfortunately, in the pictures, but I did something new with her. Using Pearl-Ex powders, I gave her blush on both cheeks and a little bit on her nose. I also took gold Pearl-Ex and went up over her eyebrow ridges so she has a little bit of shimmer above the painted eyeshadow. The effect is subtle, but in person it gives her this lovely glow. I am definitely using this technique again.

I absolutely adore her, and I know her new best friend will adore her, too.

In between various stressful and non-stressful but very busy-making things:

Pony Progress

I'm going to finish her and hopefully start hairing her tomorrow. Don't know what color. Blue and white, probably. I've got all but the topcoat done, and the gloss on her eyes.

This picture doesn't even do her justice. She is a REAL cutie.

Oh my god, you guys. I love it.

Jetan set - crimson light 2

This was incredibly labor-intensive, but I am so proud of it.

I may have mentioned that I love Edgar Rice Burroughs' Mars books. They are pulpy, seriously problematic in terms of gender and race issues, and occasionally incredibly stupid, but I adore them.

I got a kick in the butt now that we've begun the new gaming campaign, and since our continuum's Mars is canonically Barsoom, I decided I wanted to play a lady panthan (a wandering warrior of no fixed affiliation or abode; a sort of knight-errant). I mean, hot. We've recently touched on how my characters acquire things. I decided that Shara should have a traveling Jetan set so that she could strike up a game of Martian chess with friendly fellow travelers and maybe win herself a bit of cash.

So I made it. Shrug.

Lots of pics under here! )

Traveling panthan's Jetan set

Obviously the set's seen a bit of wear, and a bit of combat.

To see a list of rules and pieces, and to learn more about the game, you can go go to the ERBList site's page on Jetan.

So, that's what I spent a good chunk of last week doing. Hope you enjoy the pics, and my geeking out. Hopefully at least a few of you will love the idea as much as I do -- I know I have other ERB/Barsoom fans reading me.

Kaor, and have an awesome weekend.

It's not Thursday? Well, I won't care if you won't.

I made some things, and I put them on Etsy, where you can buy them if you like.

They are bookmarks, and they are in a new section of my shop. Click here to visit, or click on any of the pictures below.

These are the fancier ones, but I have simpler ones that are less expensive, and all are under $20, so if you are looking to spend a little Christmas money, or looking for a late gift, or just want to get yourself something pretty, I can set you up!

Celestial Romance 1

I made about forty bookmarks for the Golden Mask campaign and Pride and Prostitutes print campaign, and when I was done I took the supplies and made some extras to sell. If these do well, I'll make more. It's very enjoyable.

Give Love Wings 1

I mean, really, that is beautiful.

Lock and Key 3

My favorite of the ones I listed. Already sold, alas, but there are many others! And you should look at them! If you like them, feel free to link to them on your journal, Facebook, Tumblr, whatever it is you crazy kids do these days.

You can see the Flickr set with highlights by clicking this link right here.

My Year in Ponies

My favorite is Stolen Kisses, obviously, but Stormlight is second by only a hair.

All of them, in order:

Briar Rose
Chandraki, henna peacock pony
Amor Volat
Stolen Kisses, the pirate pony
Stormlight
Madame Swallowtail, BDSM pony (NSFW)
Tricky Jill and Candy Jack, Halloween twins
Snowbright the snow fairy

I am going to try to do at least 12 next year. These little gals (and guys) were one of the best parts of this year, and brought me joy all out of proportion to their size. I hope that you enjoyed sharing them with me.

Who doesn't love books, right?

So, I made these for the Golden Mask campaign, as incentives:

Bookmark and Hand

They're red velvet ribbon with lots of shiny stuff. Very pretty.

Bookmark and Mask

I mean, really pretty. And that picture is kickass. I mostly posted this to make you look at it.

I'm making more for the Pride and Prostitutes print run with this lovely dark purple ribbon that is all kinds of hotness. Here I have Photoshopped that first pic to look like what these bookmarks WILL look like when they're done (since I can't order supplies until I know how much I will need).

Purple Bookmark

AND you can get one without signing on for the porn. Some folks don't have room for another book, some folks don't want to have to explain the presence of cowboy porn to their friends and relatives. We understand! We had a couple people ask, so, yeah, you can totally get just the bookmark.

You can get it right here. The price is to give us some extra cash to help make up for the extra expenses caused by the assholery of that first printer who decided they didn't want our money. Seriously, still so pissed off.

I love making them, it's not any trouble, really, and we would totally appreciate it. And we can have them to you by Christmas. Gifts, people. Someone you know has an evil tome that needs to be dressed up, am I right?

She's up for auction, all four inches of her!

Seven-day auction, starting kinda low, and if you hurry, there IS a Buy It Now price.

Getcha bids in here!

And spread the word! At the very least, it's something cute to show your friends!
naamah_darling: Picture of a treasure chest with a skull and crossbones on top. My art! (Artistic)
I made this!

This is my first attempt at Fantasy Film fairy wings, and while they did a couple of unexpected things and didn't come out as I had planned, they still look really cool. I love the opalescence!

Snowbright 02 Flank

Snowbright is a little snow princess, and in the winter she can often be found outside drawing frosty pictures on windows, or icing over the Queen's ponds and fountains for the other ponies to skate and slide around on. She loves freezing cold winter days, when the sun sparkles brilliantly off the ice and snow. When she has to come inside, she loves to read fairy tales and pirate romances, and would kind of like to grow up to marry the dashing pony pirate, Lady Scarletine.

More pics below cut! )

Snowbright 05 Wings From Rear

I hope you enjoyed having a look at her! I will probably be auctioning her off, or flat-out quick-selling her, on Monday or Tuesday next.

I love winter and I love the winter holidays, so I'm hoping to do at least two more seasonal ponies this year. So pretty!

Just going to poke my nose in to be annoying and say there's under two hours left, and the Halloween pony auction is in its last three hours or so. And the price is still preeeetty low for a pair. So if you want to bid, now would be the time!

Halloween Ponies 04

Otherwise, I hope you had a good weekend and have some fun stuff to look forward to this week.

I am going to be making bookmarks for the Golden Mask incentive packages! They look awesome, and there will be pics soon. Also, SNOWY YULE PONY WITH FAIRY WINGS. BABY PONY.

What're you all up to?
naamah_darling: Picture of a treasure chest with a skull and crossbones on top. My art! (Artistic)
Just a reminder!

The auction for Jack and Jill is almost at an end, and if you want a chance at these guys, you should get your bids in ASAP.

Halloween Ponies 06

They sure are cute, and they sure want to go home with someone who loves Halloween as much as they do!

And thank you, sincerely, to everyone who has boosted or bid. Y'all are the darksome wind beneath my itty bitty bat wings.

Jack and Jill MLP Customs Halloween 2012

Decided to do this through Ebay, so getcha bids in now!

Or hit "buy it now" and . . . err . . . buy it now!

The auction will run until next Wednesday, the 24th!

If y'all linked to the pics, I'd appreciate it if you could link to the auction, too, to spread the word!
