Some of you may have seen Sargon's post; Fish died late Monday night or early Tuesday.

We don't know why. Sargon went into his room and found her lying on his coat, like always, only she wasn't asleep.

It appears she went fast and painless, with no signs of distress. She'd been doing everything normally in the days before, and not acting sick or in pain. We're sure she was never in any discomfort.

She was young, only about nine years old. Obviously this came as a total surprise.

Sunfish 04

We're holding up okay. I feel aimless and lonely and sad, and kind of like I've been taken apart and re-stuffed with dirty rat bedding and sand, and all the other things you feel after a truly unexpected loss. Sargon seems to be feeling much the same. But we're coping.

Fish was, objectively, an awful cat. She bit us and knocked things over and crapped under Sargon's desk and sometimes peed on the floor and screamed like a buggered banshee if one of the other cats so much as poked her. She farted like a leaky zeppelin, would never stop sharpening her claws on the area rug, whined incessantly if you tried to brush her, and had all the grace of a furry eggplant. Of course, we loved her dearly.

We called her Fish because "she's grey on top, white on the bottom, small, stinky, and likes to nibble." She was Fishery-Dishery, daFeesh, Chub, Chub-Rub, Chubbs, Chunky Monkey, Fatass, and Thunderoceros (or Thunderosaurus, the spelling was never clear). The only cat I have ever had that I could hear coming into the room simply because she made the floorboards creak. Probably other nicknames, too, once I start remembering them all.

She was incredibly soft, plump, and pleasing, even if you could only enjoy it for a few seconds before she got overstimulated and bit the ever-loving crap right out of you. And she was a gorgeous cat. She had green-yellow eyes and a little of that double-thick coat over her shoulders that Russian Blues get. She had tiny feet and the shortest tail of any cat I ever had except Twindle, who lost hers in a battle with space Mongols or something. And she had the longest whiskers of any cat I ever knew.

She was a good auntie to the kittens, when we had them. She was a pretty rotten friend to Etrigan, but she still washed his ears, and he genuinely didn't seem to care about being bitten as long as he could nuzzle her fat belly.

She was not my cat, she was Sargon's cat. She slept with him and went to him for affection and pestered and farted on him, mostly, if she was going to do it to anyone. I'm really, really sorry he's lost her.

The other cats were called in and shown. Smooch and Sif know, but are just trucking along like normal. Etrigan was upset, though. He usually looks like he doesn't understand – I've met rubber bands smarter than this cat – but this was a different kind of doesn't understand. He looked hurt, and scared, and haunted. He fell asleep in my arms while we went to bed last night, and slept with me all night, right up against me or on my legs, something he has never before done. He was really upset this morning, just hunching into himself and in general acting like he was really cold, which is cat for "in pain," whether emotional or physical. We had company today, and he was played with and had some treats, and he's feeling so much better. I finally got a purr out of him around five. He has an Etch-A-Sketch for a brain, which works mostly in his favor. Nothing troubles him for long. We should all be so lucky.

I've been scarce lately anyway, so I don't know that this will affect things more than they have already been affected, but . . . I don't know that it won't.

Because I don't want to end on a down note, I will simply say that Fish made the best crazy faces I have ever seen on a cat. This was my favorite, from the day she caught her one and only mouse.

Fish Hunter 05

I . . . I actually think that picture sums her up pretty well, if you imagine cat farts and then sudden shrieking.

I will miss her.

Comment amnesty is declared: I will be reading, but maybe not replying. I'm very tired. A certain black cat kept waking me up so I got very little sleep!

Have a safe holiday weekend, if this is a holiday weekend for you. Love your pets and your people.

Adorbs!

Cat update!

You should appreciate how restrained I am being not spamming you with pictures every single day. Because I could. I SO could.

This time I bring video.

As you can see, Etrigan and Fish are getting along.

Well, mostly.

He's trying to nurse on her. I thought I was going to die of cuteness.

I hadn't seen him do this before, so I ran to grab the camera and thankfully, they were still at it when I got back.

Etrigan is teething terribly, it looks tremendously uncomfortable, and I think this was a self-soothing thing on his part. He's cutting his lower right canine right now, the one growing in where his baby tooth was knocked out when he was thrown from a car. The gums had healed over completely, so I'm wondering if it's extra uncomfortable for him. He's walking around with his tongue between his front teeth nearly all the time, and is always holding his jaw slightly open. Poor little baby.

Etrigan and Fish Lazor Fight

That is a more typical interaction. They were playing. At least, Etrigan was playing. Fish was pretty annoyed at that point.

Etrigan and Fish 1

We've started to see a lot of this, though.

Etrigan and Fish 2

I love that she's actually squishing his cheek up in this one.

Sleep-Biting

Smooch fell asleep wrestling with Etrigan. Like, there is a piece of Etrigan in Smooch's mouth in this picture. Etrigan doesn't give a rat's ass.

Smooch Asleep

Typical Smooch lounging.

Toilet Hog

That is what I saw when I went to go pee late last night. He wouldn't budge. As it turns out, he was telling me his water was empty. Smooch knows how to take hostages.

Fish often visits me right after I get in bed, snuggling up near my feet. Tonight, I came in from brushing my teeth, and this is what I saw.

Fish and Bunnsley

Who says cats don't have expressive faces?

She is still lying there with one paw over her eyes and her back feet sticking straight out. She is still monopolizing Aubrey Bunnsley. Silly thing.

Today (tomorrow, since I haven't slept) is my birthday, and I am going to dinner and I get to see my dad and I will probably get to talk to some friends and game some, and later on I will keep working on pirate porn, which is going really well, and that's about all I really want for myself. What I would like for all of you is for you to be as happy today as that fat cat up there. I am wishing you major fat cat happy vibes.

I took some pics of the cats last night. And, behold, I have put Flickr to its intended use once again, instead of using it for boring art crap.

Behold!

Evil Fish 03 Crazy Face

Fish and her crazy face!

And, last, a picture that, without my meaning it to, sums up a good chunk of my life:

Most of My Life

You can click through for the mouse-over notes if you like. Two out of three cats, my crafting stuff, my gaming stuff, my comfy blanket. All it's missing is Sargon and Fish.

Anyway, I hope you had a good Halloween. We had a very nice time. And lots of trick-or-treaters! I love that there's one night a year when adorable kids in costumes come to my house and I get to give them candy. Yes, I know, I don't care for the company of children, but when you put them in cute little outfits . . . well . . . how could I not love that?

I don't make you look at my cats enough.

Here, have three pictures.

Death Fats 01

It is really hard to believe that she used to be a very thin kitty.

Some people have exercise buddies. I have a chubby buddy. I figure as long as she is really fat and yet still fucking adorable, I am good to go. It's been good for my self-esteem.

She is not being particularly adorable in this picture, though. She is sort of sleeping, but she is still making the crazy face. She makes some kind of crazy face about 70% of the time. The rest of the time she is being lethally cute, or just looking cheerful and eager in an attempt to get you close enough to bite. She bites everything. We tell people she bites, and they don't believe us because she is a really friendly, really cute cat who doesn't look like the kind of cat who will crunch her teeth into your scalp until she draws blood. They don't believe, and they pet her, and she rolls on her back to show her really soft belly, and the hook is baited and set. They touch her white bits. Then she bites them, and you can hear the actual sound of enlightenment happening. "OW! What the fuck?!" That is the sound of one hand clapping.

Death Fats 02

See, that is the face of a tail-waving maniac whose only means of relating to the world involves sinking her teeth into it. If you see her laying like this, and you touch her, you will pull back a bleeding stump and be forced to lie about how you lost that finger for the rest of your life unless you want people to think you are stupid or crazy.

I can hear her in the hall right now dragging her fish toy into my bedroom because -- horrors! -- she's gone all day without vividly demonstrating her bite-fu to me as a warning not to touch her "region.*"

We have nicknamed all our cats after diseases. Tazendra is Yersinia, more often just "The Mocus," a generic term for whatever is going around. Sif is, obviously, syphilis, or "The Syph." We decided that for Fish, we needed a disease whose reputation was as ridiculous and overinflated and full of crazy bullshit as she was, so obviously she is the obesity epidemic. We now call her The Death Fats.

Anyway, speaking of Tazendra, here she is, supporting an entire game world and all the notes for it. I am sure it was more comfortable than it looked.** She does look kind of bummed out, but that's pretty normal for her. Even her happy faces look like she's thinking about killing you with a rusty shark-hook.

Stuff on My Mocus

She likes to lay under things, and doesn't care if you pile things on her.

There. Cat pics for Caturday.

* Her "zone." Her "area." Basically anything soft and white and near her baffles. Which is what she has instead of buttcheeks.

** It was supported on both sides, underneath, so yeah, it wasn't really resting on her.

So I'm up late last night typing, and something moves next to me. I look over to my left and this is what I see.

Caught

Fish was snuggling up to Tazendra. This picture was taken after I reached for the camera, which woke Tazendra up. Shortly after this, she realized what Fish was doing, got up, hissed noisily, and left. But it was adorable while it lasted.

Astute viewers will note that Fish has put on just a little bit of weight.

We were watching kitten videos on YouTube before bed, and Fish became Very Concerned about the crying baby kittens. I decided to try to convince her that it was me, so I could reassure her that there were no kittens coming to harm. I am not sure she was reassured at all.

One-minute video requires sound; I am squeaking like a baby kitten, so be warned that it's a bit loud. Fish keeps peeping in a most worried fashion. She is very disappointed that there are no real kittens.

I know. I am mean.

She really misses those kittens, I tell you what.

I'm having a bad week due to lycanthropy, so I am cheering myself up with silly kitties.

Fishery 01

Fish says hello!

She has the neatest eyes; the pupils always glow super-green.

More kitty pictures below! )

I apologize for the lack of incisive wit and discussions of great import. This week has kicked my ass, so I'm sort of beat. I am trying a new drug in addition to what I'm already taking, so that should help in a few days.

Until then, have a good weekend. Tomorrow is Sargon's birthday so I may not be around much. We're going to do fun stuff and play hooky from life in general.

Right now, Fish is laying on her back at the foot of my bed.

She's contorted as only cats -- even fat ones -- can contort. Her feet are twisted one way, her foreparts twisted another, her head tipped so far back it's almost on her ribcage. Her back feet are balled into little fists and her forelegs are drawn up at the elbows with her particolored paws pointing in parallel lines, Egyptian-style, at the far corner of the room. Her tail is curled up between her back feet. Her belly spreads out wide and grey, white fuzz in a great swipe on her breast and a little splash further down between her barely-perceptible knees. She is the very picture of comfortable repose.

And she has the hiccups.

Every time she hiccups, she twitches all over. It starts in her belly, which tightens, then it jumps free with a rebound jiggle like a kicked Jell-o mold.

It is quite possibly the funniest thingI have seen in forever.

Well. Since I've been promising, here's pictures of the house and some Christmas stuff and some cats.

I can tell you are all just enthralled.

Let's start with the paint job in the master bedroom:

Master Bedroom 01
That's with the blinds closed, at about ten in the morning.

Master Bedroom 02
With the blinds open the room transforms. It's impossible to convey in photos, but the golden color in the walls just glows. The metallic chair rail doesn't hurt, either.

Below the cut are more pictures of house stuff and Christmas stuff. Including a couple of pictures of Fish. )

Anyway, hope you enjoyed. We're settling in here, though it's a long process. I don't know how people can move and just . . . make a place home, just like that. I was a really settled kid, we traveled but didn't ever move our home base, so I always spend several months really disoriented every time I have to move. It's worse than it used to be, too. Maybe it's the time of year, I don't know.

Anyway, happy new year, guys. I hope it's a better one than the last one, which was really unkind to a lot of you.

I have a niece that actually appreciates dead things. Do you know how few people can say that? Anyway, this is what she got for Christmas. Most kids would probably be horrified to get a cat head in a box.

Cat Skull Box 01
Note the Miskatonic University label on the side. The seal (and the font on the label on the bottom of the box) is taken from the wonderful resources at the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society, to whom you should really give your business. (And because their resources are licensed only for not-for-profit prop use, that means I can't sell anything I make using them, so . . . umm . . . be related to me, I guess, or make your own seal and label.)

Anyway, this thing was incredible fun to make. Please, click through and take a longer look! I'm very proud of this one.

Yes, that is a real cat skull. )

Inked Cat Skull 07
I just love this picture. It looks like Fish's head is much larger, but if you look at the distance between the eyes, she is not much bigger than the cat the skull was from. Fish is fat but aside from that, she is slightly above average-sized for a female housecat.

Due to the wide variance in domestic cats, I cannot even make a ballpark guess at the gender of the skull. Some housecats have sagittal crests -- Fish does -- and some do not -- Tazendra doesn't. Some females have stocky, thick bones, like Sif, and some males are naturally gracile, like Mathurin was. As with domestic dogs, our cheerful meddling has broken the barrier of consistency that give most wild species their comparative uniformity. And you know, I'm grateful for that, because I've had an incredible variety of cats in my lifetime, and each has been wonderful and special in her own way.

I'm quite happy with this project. It's rare that things turn out more or less exactly as I want them to, but this was a pleasing exception, and I got pretty much precisely the results I wanted. The only thing I could possibly say is that the skull does not look old. That, however, will fix itself with time.

Hope you enjoyed the show! It's a real pleasure sharing this stuff with you, I have to say. I know I've been busy lately and slow to reply, but I appreciate your comments, every one of them. Art is hard for me right now, and each kind word is remembered and goes to feed that fire. Thank you.

A note about skulls, animal parts, art, and ethics, for those new to the show and not sure of how I do things.
