Hey, The Actual Bear made a Night Vale pony, and she is currently up for auction with a little over 24 hours left!

Here's a link to the auction, or you can click on any of the pictures below.  It's worth popping over just to look at the other pics.

If you have a Tumblr, you can reblog this post and spread the word.

The white in her hair and parts of her design glow in the dark!  Really pretty!

Good evening, Listeners. Tonight I have a very important announcement. John Peters--you know, the farmer?--has reported seeing a small, disproportionate horse frolicking in his invisible corn fields. He describes the horse as about four inches high with a single, chubby, spiral horn growing from its forehead.

The little horse is Night Vale purple, with a long, loosely curled mane and tail of dark nightshade purple, streaked with pale glowing green. It is described as having a sweet, inviting expression, and seems quite approachable. The markings on her flanks and shoulders appear to represent prominent Night Vale landmarks. Cute!

On her right flank is what appears to be a portrait of an angel--which is impossible, because angels do not exist. But if they did, this one would have a single, glowing eye, and a halo with rays emanating from it that also glowed in the dark. On her right shoulder, the Arby's sign. Flowing up her right shoulder and the side of her neck are the lights frequently seen above the Arby's sign. On her left cheek is a dark eye with a crescent moon for an iris, and on her left flank, the President of the School Board itself, the Glow Cloud (ALL HAIL THE GLOW CLOUD). Below the Cloud, on the tiny horse's hooves, are depicted an antenna and the water tower.

If you should see this small, strangely proportioned horse, consider buying it. No others like it have ever been seen in our fair little desert community. It is surely one of a kind and would make an excellent addition to any Night Vale souvenir collection.

Overseas bidders, contact me here at the studio with the country of destination, any food allergies, and your most private phobia to receive a shipping quote. It will be shipped to the winning bidder in a sturdy box labeled very discreetly so that no one knows you are the sole owner of a tiny, glowing ungulate.

This pretty gal was a gift from my client to their beloved, and I think she came out really beautifully.

She fought me pretty hard, and she was really hard to photograph (digital cameras do not like purple at all), but I am so happy with her. A little goth, and little princess, very pretty, very romantic, and dang, look at her hair. That's perfect, is what that is. She came out so sweet and lovely!

This set went up on my Patreon a while back, and I also have clearance to share it here, so here it is!

New patrons are always welcome!

Drop on by for a visit!

(Not taking commissions, sorry!)

Check these cuties out!

Mama is a G1 Bride pony, baby is a G1 Baby Cuddles, both were in awful baity condition and have been made beautiful again.

Had a hard time with these two but am happy with how they came out.

From Tumblr:

This is Talitha and her baby, Polaris, my Ursa Major and Ursa Minor constellation ponies. The focus on this pic isn’t perfect, so it’s an outtake, but a full shoot of these cuties will be posted on my Patreon just as soon as I’ve processed all the pics.

Times are tough and I’ve lost a few patrons, and Patreon takes a a pretty big chunk of what I make. I need to bring in some more subscribers to help cover the cost of the supplements that Medicaid won’t pay for, but which keep me from being in pain every day. I could also use new shoes. So if you could spread the word, that’d be great.

So click on over! You can pledge in for only a dollar!

You get finished photoshoots, advance notification of sales and auctions, progress pics, and the occasional bit of rambling about the pony customizing process.

If you wanna signal boost on Tumblr, the post is right here.

This is one of the ponies The Actual Bear finished earlier this year.

Those of you on Facebook or subscribed to my Patreon may have seen this guy already.

Well, here's more of him.

This gorgeous boy features details from Thorin Oakenshield's map. Included are the Lonely Mountain on his display side and Smaug himself on the other.  There is a thrush with a snail shell on his left hind hoof, and the keyhole - waiting for the last light of Durin's Day - is on his nose.  He wears The Key of Durin around his neck, and key is removable. On his chest is the Arkenstone, a genuine Swarovski crystal surrounded by Dwarven runes. His whole body is parchment-mottled and shimmers slightly gold, and his designs are accented in metallic paint. His hair is in the style of the dwarves, complete with braid and gold-colored beads.

Originally a G3 Butterscotch, Erebor was given a full-body map-style makeover with Liquitex artist's acrylics and Pearl-Ex metallic powders, then rehaired in nylon Volcano, Sunshine, Chocolate Fudge, and Chocolate Pudding by Dollyhair.com.

He's already sold and is on his way to his new home.

Again, not my work, but the work of The Actual Bear.  I just thought you should see him.  Because he's amazing.

I gave you a sneak peek at this girl back around V-Day, but here's the finished set.

I've put this one up on Patreon, but it's free -- you can go look at it and download the little PDF booklet, or the individual pics. You can also share it on Facebook. The tumblr post is right over here, if you wanna share that. I'd like to pull in a few more patrons this month, considering how rough things have been.

Baby Stardust has kind of an epic story.

Baby Stardust 1

Back when Bear and I first met in bellydance class, she had this little G1 Baby Firefly on the dashboard of her truck. It enabled us to strike up a conversation about My Little Ponies, and we sort of formed a friendly acquaintance based on that and on a mutual love of The Last Unicorn. We hung out a few times, she bought some ponies off me, but we sort of fell out of touch.

Baby Stardust 2

She moved to Alaska, then Washington State. We reconnected via the internet, she visited a few times, and then a year and a half ago or thereabouts, she moved back here to Oklahoma where she was promptly inducted into our geeky gaming-and-bad-movies group. Everyone loved her, because she's easy to love.

She also brought all her old ponies with her, and unloaded some of them on me for custom bait . . . including that Baby Firefly. I knew it was her because of the sticky on her back hoof from being stuck to the dashboard. I hid her away. Someday, I knew, I was gonna do something really special with her.

Baby Stardust 3

We became really good friends. Really good. Like, drift-compatible we-named-our-jaeger good. Hung out all the time, RP partners, dorking about everything, just . . . really good friends.

Meanwhile, everyone in the world -- including a random shop owner in Eureka Springs and The Actual Bear herself -- realized that we were a couple.

Time passed.

Vacations were had.

A clue was found. It belonged to me.

Baby Stardust 4

A train ride happened. Certain words were said. And the next morning I woke up early and went out before she got up to grab a thing she'd seen the day before and wanted.

On the way, I impulsively ducked into a little shop and saw a gorgeous dichroic glass necklace (like this one, but not that one) with a tree on it. Stunning little thing. From all the way across the shop I was like "YES THAT I WILL TAKE THAT ONE PLEASE" and I bought it without even looking at the price.

And I brought it back to her in bed and gave it to her and she was so utterly delighted and it was lovely.

Baby Stardust 5

But a couple of months later, the glass tile broke off the bail and was lost somewhere along her delivery route. Her beautiful necklace was no more.

Sadness ensued.

Then I remembered Baby Firefly. A plan was born.

I made this little gal.

Baby Stardust 6

I wanted her to look like the dichroic glass.  I think she does.  I had to color correct these photos so they would show the green tint on her legs, and may have gone a little overboard with it in a couple of places, but the first two are pretty accurate.

The pictures simply do not do her justice.  How she shimmers.  I painted her base coat in pure pthalo blue lightened with pearlescent paint, then sponged more pearl over her to make highlights on her rump, face, wings, and legs.  I layered watered down color and watered down pearl paint over her several times, building up a really vivid iridescent effect.  I used two different kinds of blue -- one purplish, one greenish -- on her body, used green on her legs near the horizon, and purple on her cheeks, ears, nose, and wingtips.

Then I added a whole ocean of shimmering pearlescent stars among the trees. And when that was done, I rehaired her with Dollyhair nylon in Diamond, a stunning new sparkling white that I adore.

I am very, very proud of her!

I was still nervous, but when I gave her to The Actual Bear, she was delighted.  (Of course she was. But I was still really nervous.)

Anyway.  That's the story!

Thank you guys for sticking with me!

Etrigan's new brush 1

Etrigan's new brush 2

So, [personal profile] brightlotusmoon sent me some goodies, and there was a brush inside, and Etrigan evidently loves it.

This last week has been hard on everyone, and I think we could all use a moment of levity.

This is Luna. She's a mountain lion.*

Luna 01

She's an early birthday present.

Lots more pics. )

Mountain lions are strongly sexually dimorphic; there's a big difference in size between males and females. In this case, females are smaller. She's big, noticeably above average for a female, but not into the territory of unusually large.

This is a size comparison between her and an average housecat.

Luna's 7.3" x 5.3" (185 mm x 137 mm).

The cat is 3.4" x 2.4" (87 mm x 63 mm).

I'll spare you the math, but those proportions are almost identical. The mountain lion skull looks so very much like a domestic cat skull, just scaled up and made a bit more robust around the snout and broader between the eyes.

Luna Comparison 02

See what I mean?

This isn't surprising considering they are the largest of the small cats, and aren't really "big cats" at all. They cannot roar, because they don't have a bony hyoid. Instead, they scream like unholy terrors. They also make some really silly chirping and whistling sounds. The babies make incredibly cute little noises.

Link time!

Here's a range of sounds, including the scream of a mountain lion in heat. The sixth one down is a bubbly cougar purr!

An adult whistling/chirping.

More chirping.

You gotta watch this one! Lots of big cat noises, including some really goofy cougar noises, and a cougar purr! And at 2:50, lolarious serval bworbling. And friendly tiger chuffs!

And just for fun, a video showing what kind of toys BIG cats like to play with.

Fun, yes?

Obligatory disclaimer: mountain lions are one of the more popular large cats to keep in captivity as "pets" because they are cute as hell when they're babies, and still look cuddly as adults. This is, like, a really bad idea. Don't do it unless you have a hardcore mauling fetish.

Anyway, thanks for looking, and I hope you had fun! I always do. I'm cataloging my skull collection, an ongoing project. I'm really eager to get to the part where I take pictures of everything, because there are so many I've never showed you. I got a cast of a liger skull, and I have to say, it is terrifying. It is the scariest skull I have ever seen.

Until next time!

More pics of my animal bones.

For the new, a note about bones and ethics.

* Puma, cougar, etc. I use the words interchangeably, but favor mountain lion. Whatever, it's all the same animal: Puma concolor.

Thing I Made Thursday, one day early! To make up for all the days-late posts!

Serenity was awfully secretive about her name. She wouldn't give me anything, and then she gave me that, and I was like, "So simple? Okay!" What the pony wants, the pony gets.

She was a gift for [livejournal.com profile] brightlotusmoon. She arrived at her new home today, and now I can post pics!

Serenity

She was made from a G3 Blue Mist who had awful hair and lots of symbol and glitter rubs, and some glue drips, but was otherwise in pretty great shape. This is only the first or second time I've used the pony's base color without repainting.

I'm very happy with how she came out. I think she's right up there in the running for cutest of all the ones I've made.

She was rehaired, as always, in Dollyhair Nylon. The colors are Virgin Snow and Lemon Drop. She was repainted in acrylics and sealed with Testor's Dullcote.

I love her eyes:

Serenity Eyes

More under here! )

It's hard to see, unfortunately, in the pictures, but I did something new with her. Using Pearl-Ex powders, I gave her blush on both cheeks and a little bit on her nose. I also took gold Pearl-Ex and went up over her eyebrow ridges so she has a little bit of shimmer above the painted eyeshadow. The effect is subtle, but in person it gives her this lovely glow. I am definitely using this technique again.

I absolutely adore her, and I know her new best friend will adore her, too.

In between various stressful and non-stressful but very busy-making things:

Pony Progress

I'm going to finish her and hopefully start hairing her tomorrow. Don't know what color. Blue and white, probably. I've got all but the topcoat done, and the gloss on her eyes.

This picture doesn't even do her justice. She is a REAL cutie.

Etrigan Von Asshole, folks:

Asshole Cat is an Asshole 02

He's kind of pants at cuddling.

More here! )

And, finally, a video.

Or a link if that does not work.

He purrs the whole time. Also, he falls off the chair about halfway through when I was trying to blow in his ear to get him to do this thing he does where he goes "MRRRRR!" in this kind of pitiful way that makes me laugh so hard. The other thing it makes him do is roll around like a dumbass, so he rolled right off the edge.

Warning: I say "Asshole" A LOT. Also, I baby talk. And I repeat myself when I baby talk. Because cats like to hear their names. And his name is "Asshole."

The video cut me off. The last line should be "'Cause you're an asshole."

Hey, I've got a $200 prescription I have to pay for, and I can't do that and pay for Etrigan's vet program fee this month*, so I've listed several more bookmarks on Etsy. I'm gonna be crude and ask y'all to check it out.

I'll be throwing in free gift boxes with all bookmarks, just for this week.

Here's a peek:

Pirate Gold 1

Those are pirate-y ones! Lovely, lovely pirate-y ones!

Last Pride and Prostitutes bookmark

Also there's the last of the Pride and Prostitutes bookmarks up for grabs. If I make more like that, it won't be soon, so, grab 'em if you want 'em. There's two.

Pirate Queen 1

Charming!

Anyway, there's these and more in the bookmark section of my shop. There's also plenty of other shiny stuff, too, so go take a look.

ATTN. Queen of the Sky Frontier Supporters! Your bookmarks are all finished, and I normally wouldn't be listing any pirate bookmarks at all before you've gotten yours, but . . . dude, I would like my face to stop hurting, thanks. Thank you for being patient and understanding. <3

* In case I need to say it? The cat comes first.
naamah_darling: Sepia picture of Heath Ledger from A Knight's Tale with the words "I Miss You." (Heath Miss You)
Tazendra. The Mocus. Stinker. Pantaloons. Circus Ape. Gorilla Lips. The Creature Known As "the Mocator."

I lost her two years ago last night, and it's still like hitting that missing stair on the way down every single time.

Long before she died, I made the decision to have her bones professionally cleaned and prepared, and I made the arrangements with Skulls Unlimited some time in advance. They did a good job.

It wasn't a decision I came to lightly. I'm not a stranger to pet loss. I've had something like 25 cats in my life, and all but four of those are gone now. The one unifying thread of regret is that I have nothing of any of them but pictures. I didn't want that to be the case with her.

Now I have her bones in a box near where I sleep, where I can reach her, and that's comforting.

I've meant to get some good photographs of her for a while now, and yesterday seemed a good time. I think the results came out well, and I'm willing to let them stand for the time being as final portraits. I'm aware some people find it disturbing, which I do understand, so the squeamish among you may want to turn aside. No hard feelings.

In the meantime, a picture of her with her fur on:

Tazendra Sepia 01

Cut for kitty bones. )

But, really, this is how I remember her best:

Dey Had Teef Like Dif

I have never stopped laughing like a dumbass over that picture, and a 9x12 copy of it sits next to her box. She was beautiful, in her cockeyed goblin way, but she was also a ridiculous moldy pajama bag of a cat with a heart brim-full of loathing for all living beings save myself. She was consistently one of the best and most hilarious things in my life.

I've had a couple of people ask, over the past two years, but yes, those of you who see me IRL are welcome to visit her wee little bones anytime. I don't mind at all.

Anyway, questions welcome, if you have them. It's not a subject I'm touchy about at all, so it won't bother me.

Thank you, by the way. You guys have been lovely about it since she went, and I appreciate all the sympathy more than I can say.

I can honestly say, all of the other cats I've had were, in comparison to her, "just cats." She was something else entirely.
naamah_darling: The right-side canines of a wolf's skull; the upper canine is made of gold. (Default)
A couple folks asked how the cats are doing. Fish and Sif are all right, just bitchy and crazy, respectively. Sif doesn't do much, and Fish mostly skulks and poops on the floor, so, nothing terribly photogenic going on there.

You get the boys today.

Etrigan first, because he's an asshole. (He actually answers to "Asshole". The folks at the vet find this amusing.)

Etrigan and Bunnsley 1
Pictures of a black panther kitty go here. )
Next, Smooch! He's still funny-looking.

Yeti-cat. )

Sometimes he comes awake from a dead sleep with a startled sort of yawp, or a spit. He has nightmares, poor dude. I don't know what about, but they bother him, and sometimes he cries afterward and I have to put everything down and run over and comfort him, because Jesus Christ, a sad Yeti is the saddest fucking thing you ever saw.

YETI CHOMP

Sometimes he decides he wants to nibble my fingers. The inside of his mouth is seriously fucked up.

Anyway, there you go. Cat pics for a Wednesday.

So! News!

Queen of the Sky Frontier is at 71% funded!

We have 10 days left, and $917 to go.

I think we can make this. Five or ten bucks, or even a dollar at a time. So give us a hand!

I've ordered the ribbon for the bookmarks, and the charms are on the way. Hopefully there will be no surprises there, but I'm not super-concerned. Mostly I'm just looking forward to making them! They are SO much fun!

In other news, Createspace has shipped the copies of Pride and Prostitutes to us. The delay wasn't our fault. There's been a whole hassle with Createspace not being able to get them printed straight, and negotiations dragged out, but they're trying to put it right. We have half of them, and are waiting on the other half to arrive. They look great, though. They really do.

Book and Bookmark 2

See? There's one of the bookmarks! The Sky Frontier ones will be black with pirate-y danglies! You can secure your own right here! No porn purchase required.

And, to leave you with something identifiably cute, here's a cat.

Etrigan thinks sexy steampunk pirate porn is the shit. Here he is, smarming it up for the camera:

SEXY BEAST

He looks so healthy, no? Yeah, well, he's asthmatic as fuck, and requires monthly payments at the vet's to keep him on the steady, so if you donate a dollar, you're helping with that.

Yes, I am shameless, but LOOK AT HIS LITTLE FACE. LOOK AT IT.

Looking at him, you'd never know he's a Twinkie-thieving little asshole who has had to go to Kitty Prison twice this week for holin' while we're trying to watch a movie or roleplay. Doesn't matter. He gives good snuggle when he feels like it and is ludicrously entertaining. And have I mentioned he is stupid as a box of raisins?

Anyway, hope your Monday was tolerable, and I shall now leave you to it!

Signal boost, throw in a buck or two, or just point and laugh and share stupid cat stories. Whatever. We love you guys.
naamah_darling: Picture of a treasure chest with a skull and crossbones on top. My art! (Artistic)
Oh my god, you guys. I love it.

Jetan set - crimson light 2

This was incredibly labor-intensive, but I am so proud of it.

I may have mentioned that I love Edgar Rice Burroughs' Mars books. They are pulpy, seriously problematic in terms of gender and race issues, and occasionally incredibly stupid, but I adore them.

I got a kick in the butt now that we've begun the new gaming campaign, and since our continuum's Mars is canonically Barsoom, I decided I wanted to play a lady panthan (a wandering warrior of no fixed affiliation or abode; a sort of knight-errant). I mean, hot. We've recently touched on how my characters acquire things. I decided that Shara should have a traveling Jetan set so that she could strike up a game of Martian chess with friendly fellow travelers and maybe win herself a bit of cash.

So I made it. Shrug.

Lots of pics under here! )

Traveling panthan's Jetan set

Obviously the set's seen a bit of wear, and a bit of combat.

To see a list of rules and pieces, and to learn more about the game, you can go go to the ERBList site's page on Jetan.

So, that's what I spent a good chunk of last week doing. Hope you enjoy the pics, and my geeking out. Hopefully at least a few of you will love the idea as much as I do -- I know I have other ERB/Barsoom fans reading me.

Kaor, and have an awesome weekend.

It's not Thursday? Well, I won't care if you won't.

I made some things, and I put them on Etsy, where you can buy them if you like.

They are bookmarks, and they are in a new section of my shop. Click here to visit, or click on any of the pictures below.

These are the fancier ones, but I have simpler ones that are less expensive, and all are under $20, so if you are looking to spend a little Christmas money, or looking for a late gift, or just want to get yourself something pretty, I can set you up!

Celestial Romance 1

I made about forty bookmarks for the Golden Mask campaign and Pride and Prostitutes print campaign, and when I was done I took the supplies and made some extras to sell. If these do well, I'll make more. It's very enjoyable.

Give Love Wings 1

I mean, really, that is beautiful.

Lock and Key 3

My favorite of the ones I listed. Already sold, alas, but there are many others! And you should look at them! If you like them, feel free to link to them on your journal, Facebook, Tumblr, whatever it is you crazy kids do these days.

You can see the Flickr set with highlights by clicking this link right here.

My Year in Ponies

My favorite is Stolen Kisses, obviously, but Stormlight is second by only a hair.

All of them, in order:

Briar Rose
Chandraki, henna peacock pony
Amor Volat
Stolen Kisses, the pirate pony
Stormlight
Madame Swallowtail, BDSM pony (NSFW)
Tricky Jill and Candy Jack, Halloween twins
Snowbright the snow fairy

I am going to try to do at least 12 next year. These little gals (and guys) were one of the best parts of this year, and brought me joy all out of proportion to their size. I hope that you enjoyed sharing them with me.

Who doesn't love books, right?

So, I made these for the Golden Mask campaign, as incentives:

Bookmark and Hand

They're red velvet ribbon with lots of shiny stuff. Very pretty.

Bookmark and Mask

I mean, really pretty. And that picture is kickass. I mostly posted this to make you look at it.

I'm making more for the Pride and Prostitutes print run with this lovely dark purple ribbon that is all kinds of hotness. Here I have Photoshopped that first pic to look like what these bookmarks WILL look like when they're done (since I can't order supplies until I know how much I will need).

Purple Bookmark

AND you can get one without signing on for the porn. Some folks don't have room for another book, some folks don't want to have to explain the presence of cowboy porn to their friends and relatives. We understand! We had a couple people ask, so, yeah, you can totally get just the bookmark.

You can get it right here. The price is to give us some extra cash to help make up for the extra expenses caused by the assholery of that first printer who decided they didn't want our money. Seriously, still so pissed off.

I love making them, it's not any trouble, really, and we would totally appreciate it. And we can have them to you by Christmas. Gifts, people. Someone you know has an evil tome that needs to be dressed up, am I right?
