We've been having a fine old time rewatching Babylon 5, since I got [livejournal.com profile] sargon999 the complete series on DVD. It's nice rediscovering a series, and seeing how differently I now relate to most of the characters.

Ivanova is still wonderful, and probably my favorite character, but ten years ago I thought of her as a hardass. My standards for "hardass" have evidently changed. Compared to Starbuck, she's a pushover. I like Dr. Franklin better than I did my first time through, and Garibaldi much better. I used to have a massive crush on Commander Sheridan; I initially missed most of Season 1, so I never got to know Commander Sinclair and how utterly cool he was.

After watching "A Distant Star" Sargon was seized with a fit of geek nostalgia. He unearthed a recipe for Garibaldi's favorite: bagna cauda. We made it tonight.

This was the first time I have ever made anything, taken one bite, and had to physically restrain myself from leaping up and calling friends to come over and try some right now. It is so incredibly good. It isn't properly a main dish, it's a dipping sauce, but holy crap is it yummy.

Yes, I can hear those of you who just went to look at the recipe choking in dismay. You probably are justifiably afraid your arteries are hardening just looking at it. "All that butter! All that oil! And anchovies?! Are you INSANE?!"

Trust me. It's incredible. Anchovy paste and all. I will be making it again next time we have anyone over, I'm sure. It's the sort of thing you want to eat with company. It's a finger food -- yeah, you read that right. You put it in a chafing dish or fondue pot and dip veggies or shrimp or whatever into it, and instead of using napkins, you just catch the drippings with bread. When the bread is soaked, you eat that, too. We had it with steamed prawns and spinach tortelloni for dipping, and asiago bread for the drippings.

If I'd thought to make a small salad beforehand, it would've been even better.

While I'm gushing about wonderful things, I'd also like to take this opportunity to say nice things about Sargon. He has spent the last two days working his ass off rearranging the den. We have a new TV stand, a massive DVD shelf that holds our entire DVD collection with room to grow, and I now have my own workspace complete with desk and light. He did all this so quickly I only had one day of downtime where I could not paint. I am very pleased.

Yes, I still need to get a proper chair for myself, and there is still a massive hole in the downstairs wall, but I have a workspace! I am so, so happy.

Just in time, too. If you look at my status page, you can see my workload. THAT is why I am going to be slow to answer email for a while. I have a lot on my plate, most of it in the preliminary stages.

In other website news, I still cannot get the CSS quite right. I have been having a problem with thumbails floating in the wrong places on the main and especially the boxes and past commissions pages. I think I fixed it for good, but I can't be sure until I haven't seen it pop up for a few days.

I am no good at code; I extensively altered a template to get the site I have, and incorporated bits of this and that I found on other sites. It's amazing to me that I have made it this far.

I'll have an update on the auction stuff tomorrow; lots of good news there.

Until then, I'm worn out and have to get some rest so I can get back to work. Have a good weekend!

My official site is up and running! Please, please, go take a look!

A bigger gallery for past projects is forthcoming, and the writing section is really bare-bones right now. Eventually there will be a lot more stuff on the site, including a guest book, blog, and possibly a chat area. Anything you'd like to eventually see, sing out. Likewise, if anything looks funny, let me know.

I'm so excited! This is the first thing I've ever put together by myself, and I'm very proud of it. I'll be making minor changes to its appearance over the next few weeks but overall I'm very happy with how it looks.

I wanted to have this up by the end of this year. I can't believe I beat my goal by eleven months! Now it's time to make a serious go of this art and writing thing.

Many thanks to the clients who, over the past year and a half, have commissioned the beautiful projects whose photos appear on the site, and to all the friends who've listened to me bitch and offered input on the technical side. Also to [livejournal.com profile] thalarctos, for pointing me at DreamHost. And to [livejournal.com profile] sargon999, who has been wonderfully patient lo these many years.

No thanks at all to the Fish, who wouldn't sit on my lap to keep me warm.

So. In short go check it out, point your friends that way, all that jazz! Shoo! Scat! Git!

Sargon quit his job on Friday because they were being rancid dog-prongers. He's working through tomorrow so he can finish out the month, but after that, they can go felch themselves as far as we're both concerned. The less said about the toilet they're going down, the better. Cockbreath chickenfuckers aren't good enough to slurp the cockroaches from under Satan's foreskin.

I'm very tired lately, which makes no fucking sense considering I was able to sleep just fine last night. Something is way off. I can't get warm, I'm always hungry, I'm so tired I can't even function.

I may call the doctor today and beg him to see if the test results are in yet, as I seem to have gotten worse since last Tuesday. What a merry pain in my ass it'll turn out to be if there's nothing wrong according to The Tests. Then I'll have to start taking people apart at the seams, you bet.

Today I'm putting a polish on the website, which will be up Real Soon Now. I'm down to writing text for it, and you know, it's horrifying . . . it's so easy to let myself slip into a Pyramid Collection-like hell of fluffy and cutesy advertising copy. My instinct is to be as inoffensive and perky as possible, which, y'know, doesn't really mesh with the "Hey, you, suck my left nut!" attitude that prevails over here.

I'm sure that as time wears on I will find a happy middle ground, but for now, I feel like a dominatrix forced to serve hors d'ouvres at an evening party.

Mostly I'm just hoping my coding works. I've done basic stuff before, but this is the first thing I've built all by myself. I've never played with CSS before. If something breaks, I'm not sure I'll know how to fix it!

Still, hell or high water, I'm getting the site launched within a couple of weeks, and I'm really looking forward to it. I HAVE to get it running; I've got to start pulling in money because clearly The Lab is trying to kill me and rob me blind. Maybe not in that order.

If anything I ever produce is as addictive as that shit, shoot me. I'd be sorry, because I wouldn't live to spend my filthy lucre, but you'd be doing the whole species a favor. I bet nobody's laughing about your plans for world domination now, Beth. How many of us do you own?

Anyway. Website. I remain undecided on the matter of whether or not I should include a link to this here journal, or start another journal for professional purposes. I think the latter, since I can always tell people this journal is here if they don't already know, but once they've seen it, they can't unsee it.

I'm looking at Dreamhost.com for my hosting; anyone who has had experience with them, good or bad, sing out.

That's enough for now. I seem to have nothing important to say.

Rather, I do. But I just can't articulate it. So it's time to stop trying and get some rest.

I'm putting together a very rough version of what will eventually become my website, and I want to ask you all what you'd like to see on it. Obviously, it's primarily to showcase my painted boxes. There will be areas for my writing and for some personal information as well.

Right now I'm still brainstorming, populating FAQs and such. Is there anything that you think I should address? Anything you'd like to see? Any questions you think I should answer about my art or writing? Information you think I should provide?

I would love to hear what you have to say. Go on. Throw ideas out there, get your collective brain working on this.

The goal is to have this done by the end of the year, but that's almost too easy. I'd have to really screw up not to have it ready by my birthday, and I'd like to have it up by March.

I'm open to recommendations for good low-cost hosting with no advertising and no adult content restrictions. I'm looking at NearlyFreeSpeech.net.

And a domain name would be really good. Unfortunately, amandagannon.com, shadowmuse.com and shadowmuse.net are taken, so I have no idea what I'll call it. For various reasons, I don't want it to be naamahanything.com.

In other news, we are still buried under tons of ice, with snow expected over the weekend. Welcome to Fimbulwinter. I've been housebound for days; last night was the first time I went more than a block from home since the Friday before last. (First because my car was dead – and is still dead – and then because of the weather.) So there's some stir-crazy going on.

All that aside, I am painting. The new project should be finished next week since all that's left is the fiddly little outline and the topcoat. And it's already looking frigging awesome.

I also owe two of you packages full of smelly, smelly perfume; those have just been mailed, I hope. Sargon has volunteered to play mail-monkey for me, the darling, but I haven't heard back from him yet.

That's it for now. Get your brains working and tell me how I ought to go about conquering the intarwebz!
