"We thought he was a goner, but the cat came back the very next day."

He's back. He's wet. He's filthy. He's freaked out. He's SO hungry. And he's still an asshole, so there's that.

Thank you for the well-wishes everyone, and the good juju. Apparently it helped him find his stupid way home.

God. I haven't even gotten out of bed all day, literally sick with worry. And now I just want to get right back into it and sleep until tomorrow. I'd feel bad for freaking out so much, but when I was a kid I lost so many cats -- thirteen? -- from outdoor accidents like autos and dogs and just mysterious disappearances, and one right in front of me, and I found I just couldn't cope with that and the knowing what being utterly alone and exposed and scared feels like.

Freaking out is understandable - I'd have been freaking out in your position too.

I'm glad he's back. Tell him the internet says he's not allowed to do that again.

I didn't share last night because I didn't know if it would be helpful or harmful, but I've lived with several "grumpy old man" cats that each up and buggered off and scared the shit out of everyone. In most cases they found their own way home, in one case we got a call because he'd got himself over the main road but couldn't get back, and had strolled into the office directly across the road yelling at everyone. So... they're tough old bastards.

Welcome home Etrigan! Sounds like he got trapped somewhere; over the years, we've had two of our Tribe go, and return in a similar state (and two never come back, one of them one of the same cats).

It's a chance you take if you allow them to go out. One that for all our fears and losses, is one worth taking for their freedom.

Hugs to all your family (and to you and Etrigan especially)

YAAAAAAAAY! Gah I was so worried for you! Don't you dare feel bad for freaking out so much! My foster cats escaped literally less than three feet out the door (managed to open a screen door and then huddled on the porch in "OMG WHAT DID WE JUST DO?" terror) and after I got them back inside I collapsed onto my cold cement porch and hyperventilated. If they'd been gone 15 hours I would be absolutely losing it.

I'd like to think my juju was the tipping point. All hail Bob, returner of lost cats!

Seriously, so incredibly glad he made it home.

Oh, good. *sigh of relief* He was probably like, six feet away from the house anyway, paralyzed with fear and stupidity, and then wetness. He probably won't make that mistake again. *hugs* So glad he's back and you're feeling better!

I had a cat when I was younger, that fell out of one of the attic windows (one of the little panes of glass was broken) onto the porch roof, and it took us ages to figure out that's where he was. Etrigan probably did something equally stupid...

I am so happy and relieved to have read this post first instead of the other one. I remember that feeling of not being able to cope when the weasels got out years and years ago.* I hope Etrigan decided that the entire World Out There is a wet, miserable place and remains an indoor kitty for the rest of his days, long may he reign. I also hope you get some good, healing sleep tonight.

*When I finally got hold of my husband, an hour after I realized they were outside, he made the 30-mile trip in 15 minutes. Fortunately they had only gone as far as the neighboring apartment's porch. But I still remember that feeling, like you might actually have a heart attack and die from the stress and fear.

Woohoo! So glad he's back.

We have indoor/outdoor cats* and when mine don't show up for dinner, I panic. Glad he's turned up to terrorise you again :)

Have been off LJ the last couple of days and totally missed this. So glad he's home - it's terrifying when cats go missing.

Scully went AWOL for 3 days once (she's an outdoor cat but still had always come in at night) - I'd been out on the common calling and calling, turned round in tears to go home and she was sitting right behind me with this look on her face like "What?"

I was so totally out of the loop on this one... my computer got all bogged down with some crap and I had almost no internet for a few days- it was kind of weird.

I am SO GLAD you did not lose the lil'Buggar!!! (WHEW!)

I also grew up where cats were just nailed by the road with such regularity I am almost paranoid about it now. :( Eeeeek. I'd have been panicing too!

YAY for a happy ending!
